Go to Israel and visit the Druze village of Pek’iin in Israel’s Galilee region. The ancient synagogue dating back to the time of the Talmud is still in use in modern times.

The Galilee area where Pek’iin is located is populated with ancient olive trees. Local industries use olives, the precious oil and gnarled wood to create very special items. Products made from the locally grown ancient olive trees include superb soaps, particularly the handmade olive oil soaps by Savta Gamila which are sold in Harrod’s, in Europe and around the world.

Opera in Israel: Verdi’s Jerusalem Under the Stars

Experience Israel: An evening at the opera

The opera “Jerusalem” by Verdi (written in 1847) will be performed for the first time in Israel on June 6, 2011, at the Sultan’s Pool in a special semi staged production accompanied by an exceptional display of lighting designed by Eyal Tavori.
The story of the opera Jerusalem takes place during the Crusades to the Holy Land. It opens in France, then takes place in the city of Ramle (part of the Holy Land) and finally reaches Jerusalem where the Crusaders wait before their battle to capture the holy city of Jerusalem.

Nothing can be more symbolic than to perform this opera in Jerusalem itself. David Stern, the music director of the Israeli Opera, will lead the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA, the Israeli Opera Chorus and international soloists including Scott Piper and Roberto Serville and leading Israeli soprano Ira Bertman in this performance. The production will be directed by Moshe Kepten, the artistic director of the Israeli Festival, and designed by Bambi Friedman.

If you prefer to watch your opera at the Dead Sea, Verdi’s “Aida” is being performed at the foot of Masada on June 5, 2011.

Visiting  Israel can include an evening at the opera. Even if Hebrew is not your language, you can still plan your Israel travel with cultural events at one of Israel’s concert halls or outdoor arenas.

Jerusalem Day by Day: Plan Israel Travel

Frommer's Jerusalem Day by Day. by Buzzy Gordon

Plan Israel Travel

When travel writer Buzzy Gordon interviewed me about the services Drive-Israel.com provides to tourists visiting the Holy Land and Israel, I never expected the huge blurb in his new book, Frommer’s Jerusalem Day by Day.

And yet, surprise, on page 160, Drive-Israel.com appears prominently. Buzzy recommends our travel planning services for custom trips, complete with mapped routes, and reservation services.

How cool is that!

During the interview, we discussed how all accommodations can “look good” on the internet, which is why at Drive-Israel.com we make every effort to inspect our recommended lodgings. That got a thumbs up.

If you are considering a trip to my part of the world, the new Frommer pocket-size guide to the holy city of Jerusalem is a wise investment. Lots of info on must-see sights, new trends, and advise on traveling wisely.

Thank you, Buzzy!

An art museum in a most unusual place! Located in the Jezreel Valley, the Ein Haroud Art Museum, located on Kibbutz  Ein Haroud, predates the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. The architect, Samuel Bickels, a kibbutz member, designed the museum to use the area’s abundance of natural light to the fullest. Windows are positioned high up on the walls, allowing maximum space for hanging exhibits while simultaneously providing a luminous natural light to flow into the galleries.

Up close I did not see the whole picture. Only after stepping away, did it become obvious: a cluster of grapes from the Holy Land as brought back by the spies. How ingenious. Made of local materials, this stunning sculpture awaits your closer inspection at the Tefen Open Air Museum in the Western Galilee. Don’t miss it!
