Only in its second year, Jerusalem Design Week brings together the worlds of plastic arts, cinema, and fine arts. The venue of the week’s events is the not-to-be-missed Hansen Compound, a Jerusalem landmark property, once a hospital to treat lepers, and now a cultural event center. Located in the prestigious neighborhood of Talbieh, a block from the Jerusalem Theater, the heritage property is worth a visit.

Nocturnal animals reveal themselves if you know where to look, and dainty tan color gazelles are camouflaged – nature’s way of protecting them.

Most surprising are the ancient rock drawings, or petroglyphs, found on rocks lying here and there, in unmarked spots, and visible to desert experts. The rock drawings tell a story of people who lived in the Negev thousands of years ago – and if you can interpret them, the lives of the ancient people are an open book…

A recent exhibit at Stef Wertheimer‘s industrial park in the Western Galilee showcased the vividly colored and exquisitely hand-stitched wall carpets by artist Noa Eshkol from the Tel Aviv suburb of Holon (1924-2007). A creative and multi-talented artist, Eshkol formulated a movement notation system with Avraham Wachsberg in the 1950s. Twenty years later, she and her dancers created wall carpets from fabric remnants that are rich in tone, colors and textures.

Windows are positioned high up on the walls, allowing maximum space for hanging exhibits while simultaneously providing a luminous natural light to flow into the galleries.
